My Simple Trick for Styling My Family
Styling is the biggest hold up in photographing your family. So I’m going to share with you my favorite trick.
I dress me first! I find an outfit I absolutely adore. Maybe it’s the color or the pattern or the way it fits that drew me in. One thing is for sure: I can’t live without it and can’t wait to wear it.
Once I have my outfit chosen, everyone else stays in neutral colors that coordinate well with my dress. Coordinating neutrals is easy because they are almost impossible to clash. If my dress is cool toned, then the family is in cool toned neutrals: white, bone white, light grey. If my dress is warm, then the family is in warm toned neutrals; white, cream, brown, camel.
As I’m choosing the family’s outfits, I might throw in a soft, small pattern or organic texture to keep things from falling flat. Think linen, knubby kits, a small floral.
Lastly, do NOT forget shoes. We are photographing the entire body and you won’t want to see those ratty old sneakers that were worn all summer!
So that’s my simple formula:
My dress + The rest of the family in neutral colors + One subtle pattern on a child
