Maternity Frequently Asked Questions

Introduction to my Denver Maternity Photography

Denver families often say that my maternity photos showcase the delicate balance of grace, intimacy, connection, and the celebration of femininity.

What’s included in the maternity session fee? What should I plan to invest in my maternity portraits?

First, the non-refundable session fee reserves your time in the studio or on location.

After your maternity portrait session takes place, we will gather again either in my studio or the comfort of your home to view your portraits for the first time.

During this meeting, we will put together artwork such as framed pieces for the nursery, gifts for grandparents and heirloom albums. Whether you choose to purchase this artwork through me or on your own, you will have a plan for exactly the best way to enjoy your beautiful photography.

A maternity session/creative fee is $450. After the session, we can put together a few options to ensure you stay in your budget.

You can also add my services to your baby registry or group gift for your baby shower.

Maternity Portrait Styling Ideas

After booking your session, I will reach out to discuss all the options, learn which images you loved most and help you put together the right mix of clothing and intimates. We recommend everything from luxurious gowns to a white button down shirt, simple silk robes and lacy bralettes. You should feel beautiful, sensual and comfortable.

As a luxury maternity photographer in Denver, Colorado, my style is sensual, intimate, and feminine. To style a maternity portrait session, we mix intimates with tulle, lace, silk and semi-nudity to highlight the glorious work of your body. We have a wardrobe for your use, so you really only bring a few pretty intimates.

Makeup is include so you feel your best. Hair is left natural and full with soft curls or straight.

When should I take pregnancy photos?

Optimal timing for a maternity photoshoot typically falls within the range of 28-33 weeks, unless your carrying particularly small. If you are blessed with multiples, you’ll need to book around 24-28 weeks.

Your belly should be popped and prominent, but early enough that you, as the mother-to-be, feels comfortable and confident. Usually around the beginning of the third trimester is that sweet spot.

Are pregnancy photos worth it?

Maybe I’m biased, but YES, maternity portraits are worth it! There are just few life altering moments you’ll never experience again. One of them is carrying your babies. You are not only photographing your pregnancy for you, to celebrate one of life’s most precious gifts, you are also documenting a moment your child will only experience through photos. As a mom to three who are now in their teens I can tell you firsthand my children love seeing photos of me when I was pregnant. They pour over albums of their entire story, and this is when their story began.

The timeless allure of maternity portraits transcends fleeting moments. Carrying a life is truly a miracle and should be honored in the most beautiful way. This is the beginning of your baby’s story.

How do I prepare for a maternity photoshoot?

This is when it’s important to hire an experienced photographer such as my maternity portrait studio. You really should not have to do a lot to prepare for your session and instead be able to rely on a portrait photographer who is equipped to handle many of the details. As your photographer, I handle everything from clothing, to choosing the best location, to guiding you with poses. You will want to book a hair appointment about two weeks before the session and a nail appointment a day or two prior. This will ensure you feel fresh and camera ready!

You will also want to exfoliate your face regularly with a gentle exfoliant and use a good moisturizer so your makeup sits nicely on your skin.

Lastly, bring a few pretty bra and underwear sets. I send lots of recommendations so you can find something truly pretty and special.

Other than a little self-care, you will arrive for a morning of beauty and pampering. The moment you walk in, you are handed a cup of tea or mocktail, a fresh scone and sat down in the makeup chair. You will enjoy an hour of hair and makeup with my favorite Chanel makeup artist who will ensure you look naturally gorgeous. You will have access to my full wardrobe of curated maternity gowns and robes.

You are already doing so much. Let me take care of you for this one day.

How long should is the maternity photoshoot?

Once you arrive, you will spend about an hour in hair & makeup. This is my favorite part, getting to know you and enjoying a little girl talk. You can sip on a tea or coffee, nibble a scone and enjoy a moment of indulgence.

Then we select dresses and outfits to begin our session. You’ll have a moment to try things on and I’ll give you my guidance to ensure we get a good amount of variety. I have a wardrobe full of long and flowing maternity dresses, a handful of beautiful sheer dresses to highlight your beautiful baby bump and a few pieces that are “wow” statement dresses.

We will then shoot for about 60-90 minutes. I take my time guiding you through poses, tell you where to place your hands, and show you how to move. You’ll never wonder what you’re supposed to do!

You should plan to spend about two and a half hours with me, enjoying a morning of pure pampering.

I’m not comfortable in front of the camera.

This is true of nearly every woman I photograph! But you’re in good hands. My nurturing approach aims to alleviate any reservations you have about being in front of the camera. I will instruct and guide you into every pose, molding you into precisely the post that looks best. You will never not know what to do with your hands or where to look. My guidance extends to every detail, from pose direction to creating an environment where you feel comfortable, resulting in natural and captivating portraits.

I’m not sure I feel good enough for a maternity portrait session.

I understand this sentiment having been pregnant three times. Understanding the insecurities that can accompany pregnancy, I empathize with expectant mothers, drawing from my own experiences. But the one thing I’ve never heard is regret in having documented any stage of growing your family.

My goal is to elevate self-confidence and showcase the innate beauty of this phase. Trusting in my expertise and understanding, you will feel radiant throughout the session.

I will pamper you and, as a result, show you just how beautiful you are despite the day-to-day struggles of carrying a baby. Put your trust in me, that with my experience in posing women and my experience as a mom, I can bring out your best and make you feel like a queen.

How should I plan to use my maternity photos?

Many of my clients choose to hang at least one maternity portrait in the nursery. But some choose  more intimate areas of the home such as the master bathroom, a small nook in the master bedroom, and for those lucky enough to have a grand walk-in closet, the dressing area is a perfect location.

Rarely opting for large wall art, the most common size I print and frame is an 8x12. These gorgeous portraits are printed in a watercolor texture and feature a torn edge that floats inside the frame. This moment is special, the display should be too.

If you also choose to photograph your newborn photos with me, many of these clients opt for a matching newborn framed print or two in the nursery to sit alongside the maternity portrait. Albums are also tremendously popular.

I also offer glass box prints which feature 10 portraits in a glass box that sits perfectly perched on a coffee table or shelf. Later, you can add more prints from future sessions. These sweet boxes are magical storytellers.

All collections come with the full set of digital image files for safekeeping. Digital files should never be thought of as the end-game. Always keep dreaming of your home will showcase your family’s story.

Can I Include Family Members or Pets in the Maternity Photoshoot?

Of course! I more than happily welcome children, spouses and partners into your portrait session. When we sit down to plan your session, we will discuss the best time for these family members to arrive at your maternity photoshoot.

What Locations are Ideal for Maternity Photoshoots?

Most of my maternity portraits are photographed in my Denver portrait studio located on Hampden just north of DTC. My clients have found they are much more comfortable in my studio due to the intimate nature of my sessions.

If you are seeking an outdoor session however, I have beautiful locations along the Colorado foothills where I have photographed many families.

Are Customized Props or Themes Available for Maternity Sessions?

In my editorial style, the theme of my portraits is you and the amazing glorious work of your body. I do not often include props or incorporate themes, keeping the focus on the most beautiful subject possible, you.

Is Retouching or Editing Included in the Maternity Photography Package?

When you view your images for the first time, they will be fully retouched and ready for print. As a professional photographer with years of experience around the world, most of my work is done during the photoshoot. Ensuring images are beautiful exposed, that the use of light falls perfectly on my subjects in a way that highlights their beauty and using my camera its fullest ability, my images look quite beautiful out of camera.

In post-production, each image is opened to hand-retouch any lingering details. I keep skin natural, but touch-up minor imperfections to ensure you look radiant. I might pinch an area of the body here and there, but again most of this work is done through the camera with proper posing and lighting.

Can I Request Specific Poses or Styles for the Maternity Session?

I would love to see any ideas you have in regards to poses. My mind is open! The style of all my sessions though remains close to my heart. If you fell in love with the look and feel of my portfolio, you will be over the moon when the images are of you.

How do I book a session with you?

To book a session, you will first need to fill out the inquiry form here. I accept a limited number of sessions each month. Once I reach this number of bookings, that month is closed.
